Sainfoin also known as “holy hay or healthy hay” has been recognized for its exceptional palatability and health benefits. Sainfoin dating back to the 13th century was a common feed for horses and livestock. Over the years, farmers changed to faster growing crops and Sainfoin faded because of its low yields. Sainfoin requires the perfect soil, elevation, and moisture, which is found in very few areas in the United States.

Being located in Wyoming’s Bighorn Basin with its high elevation is a prime area in the United States for Sainfoin production. Although the lower yields, we continue to grow Sainfoin because of the benefits we see in our own livestock.
• Sainfoin is highly palatable.
• Research has shown voluntary consumption is 20% to 30% higher than other forages.
• Sainfoin is low in sugar and starch.
• It can be considered for any small animal including those on specialty diets.
• Sainfoin has higher levels of condensed tannins. Meaning proteins are protected as they move through the stomach and small intestine. Hay is primarily digested in the hind gut making protein utilization higher.

• Non-bloat, studies have shown Sainfoin, unlike other legumes, does not cause bloat due to high tannin levels.
• Research has found that as little as 20% Sainfoin in the diet can reduce the risk of bloat to virtually zero.
